向忠发出席过中共“四大”、“五大”、“六大”会议,当选为“四大”、“五大”中央委员,“八七”会议上担任临时中央政治局委员,“六大”时被选为中共中央总书记。他是如何当选的?又是怎样变节的?又为什么仅被国民党抓到两天多就被蒋介石下令枪毙呢?等等这一切,有着一连串的历史之谜。早年的向忠发出身贫寒,从1921年起就参加了湖北地区的工人运动,1926年10月就当选为有几十万工会会员的湖北省总工会委员长。不久,随着北伐战争的胜利推进和国民政府的北迁,全国革命中心由广州移向武汉,使湖北的工人运动有举足轻重的作用,因此,在1927年8月7日的“八七”会议上他当上了临时中央政治局委员。
