Every year, the United States removes 7 million tons of sludge generated from wastewater treatment. The most common method currently used is to pour into the sea or fill land. Recently, the San Diego Wastewater Recycling Company invented a new type of wastewater treatment equipment that can use sludge to produce building lightweight aggregates. This aggregate can be used in light concrete blocks and structural concrete. The screened household wastewater is mixed with clay, alum and polyacrylic acid and then coagulated and precipitated. The clays used are non-expanding kaolins. The flocculated particles are gravity-deposited. The regenerated water flows slowly out of the top of the clarifier, and the sludge is sucked out from the bottom. The sludge was further thickened to 45% solids on a dehydration belt.
