Kate Chopin’s novel The Story of One Hour is a classic of female literature in American literature. It tells the story of a woman’s emotional reaction and mental journey after she learns about the death of her husband. A soul whose thirst for freedom is experiencing a transient Ecstasy after being crushed by reality and embarked on the tragedy of death. This essay attempts to explain the dual theme illustrated by this novel from the perspectives of symbolism and irony from the external and psychological conflicts of the novel characters in three space-time spaces: the awakening and loss of feminism; the bondage of marriage and the pros and cons of single freedom.
