In this paper, an expression for calculating the relationship between the odd and even mode impedances and the frequency of parallel coupled microstrip lines is proposed. The expression is suitable for a wide range of applications and has unprecedented accuracy. This set of expressions includes the effective permittivity, the characteristic impedance using the power-current equation, and the open-circuit equivalent length of the two basic modes of coupled microstrip line. Until the millimeter wave band, these formulas are still very accurate. These formulas are derived from a large amount of accurate data obtained from a rigorous spectral-domain hybrid modeling approach, and it is believed that these formulas will greatly improve the computer-aided design of coupled microstrip line filters, directional couplers and other components.
