西泠印社早期社员状况,一直是人们比较关心的问题,也是一个甚为复杂的问题。我国文人结社有着悠久的历史,但只是到上个世纪末才有了一套比较严格完善的登记制度。西冷印社作为‘天下第一名社’,至今已走过了整整一百年的历程,正是由于在成立之初没有像今天的社团登记这样严格履行社员人社登记手续,以及对社史资料保存的不经意,才导致我们今天在关于西泠印社社史,尤其是早期社史最重的环节——社员状况方面,不得不存有许多谜团。当然,创社的四君子及早期的几任社长,谁也不会料到他们当日创建的印社,在历经沧桑后有今日如此之辉煌。历史给我们留下的遗憾,是不当苛责先贤们的。但作为后继者,我们有责任、有义务还历史以本来的面目。

The regret that history has left us is improperly blamed on the sages. However, as a successor, we have the responsibility and obligation to restore history to its original appearance.
