Harry: Blimey, that was quite a night last night. Fadi: 1)Fantastic. Carlos’ new restaurant was packed.
Johnny: I didn’t see Carlos all night, he was so busy.
Sarah: The food was great—but I’ve never eaten Brazilian food before—it was lovely.
Johnny: It was pretty good. Better than English food, but not as good as Chinese food, really.
Sarah: You’ll never change will you, Johnny?
Johnny: Not when it comes to my food, no!
Tony: So it was a success, then?
Harry: Oh yeah. I’m still 2)stuffed.
Magda: Stuffed?
Sarah: Full of food.
Fadi: Mmmm…delicious food.
Bindyu: I thought the rice was a little overcooked, actually.
Harry: Oh come on Bindyu, stop criticising!
Bindyu: I can’t help it if I’m a 3)perfectionist!
Magda: A what?
Harry: (sighing) She’s a perfectionist. Everything has to be perfect all the time.
Bindyu: Yes it does! What’s wrong with that? Like our wedding will be perfect, won’t it Harry?
Harry: (4)uncertain) Er, yeah.
Bindyu: Anyway, I have to go now, busy busy. I’ll see you all later!
Harry: I think I’ll 5)stick around for a bit. See you later. (sound of kiss)
Bindyu: Bye.
(door’s closed)
Johnny: So, are you all ready for the big event?
Harry: The what?
Johnny: Your wedding!
Harry: Oh, of course…well…to tell you the truth…there are a few problems.
Fadi: Oh, no. What kind of problems?
Harry: Bindyu’s family want a really big traditional wedding. I’m not sure I want that. I just want to keep it really small, close family, a few friends.
Johnny: Will you get married in church?
Harry: Nah. I’m not religious, me. Just the local registry office.
(door’s open)
All: Hello Olivia!
Olivia: Hi there everyone! Mind if I sit down?
Fadi: Not at all. Come and join us.
Olivia: So what are you boys all talking about? Johnny: Harry’s got some doubts about the wedding.
Olivia: Having second thoughts?
Harry: No, not at all. I really want to marry her, but…
Fadi: They’ve got different ideas about the wedding.
Harry: Well, Bindyu’s family have…
Olivia: Hmmm. I see. Have you told her what you think?
Harry: No. Well, not yet.
Olivia: Why not?
Harry: You know what she’s like. She always thinks she’s right.
Fadi/Johnny: (laughter) Johnny: That’s girls for you!
Fadi: Yeah, dead right!
Olivia: Oh, don’t be ridiculous! Harry, Bindyu is your fiancée, your future wife! You have to talk about these things!
Harry: Yeah. I guess you’re right. I’ll sit down and have a proper talk with her about it.
Johnny: Well done, Olivia.
Fadi: She’s always right.
Olivia: Not always.
Fadi: So, Olivia, can I get you a drink?
Olivia: Erm, not right now. I have to 6)run off.
Fadi: Oh, yeah? Are you going anywhere special?
Olivia: Erm, well, yes, actually.
Fadi: Oh, yes?
Olivia: I’m meeting someone.
Johnny: “Someone”?
Olivia: Yeah. A guy who comes into my shop. He’s just a friend…
Johnny: Oh, yeah?
Olivia: Yes. Really. Anyhow, I have to go. Bye all!
All: Bye!
(door’s closed)
Johnny: What do you think about that then Fadi? Olivia’s got a boyfriend!
Fadi: Oh, he’s not a boyfriend. He’s just a friend. She said so.
Johnny: And you believe her?
Fadi: To be perfectly honest, I couldn’t care less!
Johnny: I don’t believe you!
(door’s open)
Fadi: (relieved, then excited) Phew…Hey Carlos! The man of the moment! Congratulations!
Johnny: Congratulations on the great success!
Harry: Yeah, it was a brilliant night.
Carlos: Was it?
Johnny: Of course it was!
Fadi: What’s up? The restaurant was packed last night!
Harry: Everyone was stuffing themselves!
Carlos: Yeah—that’s the problem!
Fadi: Eh? I don’t understand.
Carlos: Well, did you notice that nobody actually paid for anything?!
Fadi: Erm, well, no, we didn’t pay.
Johnny: But that’s because we’re your friends, isn’t it?
Fadi: Yeah!
Harry: And because we’d spent most of the day helping you decorate the place so it was ready for the opening.
Carlos: Of course, of course, I don’t mind that—I didn’t expect you lot to pay. The problem is that nobody did! I thought giving out free food would be a good idea!
Fadi: It was—everyone loved it!
Johnny: But your opening night’s profit?
Carlos: Zero. Nothing. Not only that—I lost a lot of money!
Fadi: Oh no.
Johnny: You need a good business manager! Like me! I know how to make money!
Harry: (ironic yawn) Yeah yeah yeah.
Johnny: Listen—look on the bright side! It’s all good publicity—those people will come back and spend loads of money and tell all their friends and then they’ll come too!
Carlos: I certainly hope so…now I’ll just have to wait and see!
Johnny: I didn’t see Carlos all night, he was so busy.
