Asian Med News 1983;5(9):1. Although rapid progress has been made in the treatment of many kinds of tumors, the prognosis of patients suffering from glioblastoma is still poor. A team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in addition to routine external X-ray therapy, used this method to deliver 125 radioactive particles of iodine (using prostate catheters) to treat prostate cancer and pancreatic cancer. The microparticles are implanted in brain tumors. Such particles release high doses of radiation directly into the tumor bed, allowing a greater total dose of radiation and less damage to normal brain tissue. Philip Gutin, associate professor of neurosurgery, said that their two patients did not relapse 2 years after treatment. Under normal circumstances, these 2 patients may have died.
