Wendel Berry’s novel “Memories” reflects his views on family, group, nature, economy and other aspects more completely. The journey of protagonist Andy Cartwright from the western United States to the hometown of Kentucky can be described as a soul-stirring spiritual journey because he has undergone a process of separation from spiritual meat to union, from doubt to belief, from pain to redemption. The novel not only vividly depicts Andy’s intense inner conflict, but also profoundly reveals the fundamental problems of contemporary American society through the differences between urban and rural areas, economic patterns and lifestyles he realizes from his memories and reality. The novel contains many levels of ethical relations, including self and others, individuals and groups, human beings and nature, which show the ideal way of life for Berry and provide a helpful method for solving common social problems.
