据现有文献资料 ,清内廷演剧机构南府、景山约成立于康熙朝 ,而终止于道光七年 ,共约一百四十一、二年的历史 ,基本上反映了清代“盛世”期间的演剧状况。在南府、景山共约一个半世纪的时间里 ,内廷所演戏不外昆、弋二种。据现有文献资料 ,从嘉庆朝开始有极零星的“侉戏”(乱弹 )出现在内廷的舞台上 ,而其时的民间舞台“侉戏”已蓬勃发展 ,呈现出和“雅部”昆剧平分秋色之势 ,从这一点上———戏剧声腔的发展流变上说 ,内廷大大滞后于民间。
