“专业集团”声名扫地;激进势力难得人心;温和派占尽天时地利人和。千呼万唤,印尼终于有了新总统。10月20日,印尼伊斯兰教师联合会总主席阿卜杜勒—拉赫曼·瓦希德以373票当选印尼第四任总统,而此前被广为看好的印尼民主斗争党总主席梅加瓦蒂落败后当选副总统。瓦希德虽貌不惊人,在国外名不见经传,但却是印尼国内的一位重量级人物,曾被《亚洲周刊》评为1997年度亚洲最有影响力的50人中的第20位。他不但在印尼宗教界德高望众,而且还因其温和派穆斯林的形象、八面玲珑的交际手段和开放、民主的政见受到各阶层人士的尊重。
The “professional groups” have been denouncing fame; the radical forces have a rare heart; the moderates have taken full advantage of the time and place. After many calls, Indonesia finally has a new president. On October 20, President Abdul Rahman Wahid of the Indonesian Federation of Islamic Teachers, who was elected as Indonesia’s fourth president by 373 votes and Megawati, the widely favored Indonesia Democratic Fighting Party, Dick defeated elected vice president. Although not an exception, Wahid, unknown abroad, is a heavyweight in Indonesia and ranked 20th by Asia Week magazine as one of Asia’s 50 most influential people in 1997. He is respected not only by the religious community in Indonesia, but also by his image of a moderate Muslim, smooth social means and an open and democratic political outlook.
