2004年11月17日,美国第一所孔子学院落户著名公立大学——马里兰大学,率先向孔子学院伸出友谊之手,揭开全美兴办孔子学院的序幕。推动者中,时任马里兰大学校长的牟德先生起了关键作用。牟德先生是美国著名的工程领域专家、教育家,现任美国国家工程院院长。他不仅在工程领域成就卓著,而且积极推动中美之间的科技、教育和人文交流。担任马里兰大学校长期间,他注重拓展国际视野,建立了第一所中国研究园(China research park)。在他的推动下,马里兰大学孔子学院将汉语教学扩展到马里兰州50多所中小学。此外,他还多方筹资,与中方合作设立基金,为孔子学院可持续发展提供了保障。2010年,马里兰大学孔子学院被评为全球先进孔子学院。2011年,牟德先生因杰出工作而获得“孔子学院突出贡献奖”。如今,作为孔子学院总部理事会理事,牟德先生常往来于孔子学院大会、理事会等各种重要活动之间,热情为孔子学院的建设建言献策。在工作间隙,他接受了《孔子学院》的专访。
On November 17, 2004, the first Confucius Institute in the United States settled at the famous public university - University of Maryland.
