在第二、三、四讲中已经提到了光纤(光缆)、光源和检测器件,光纤传输系统就是由这三个部分组成的。组织光纤传输系统的目的在于传送信息。那么信息是如何通过光纤系统传输的呢?对目前的技术水平来说,还是把不同性质的信息(譬如声音和图像等)变成电的信息,然后再用电的信息在发送端控制光源的发送。受电信息控制的光经过光纤的传输到达收端,再用检测器把光信息变成电的信息,之后恢复成不同性质的原信息。一般把不同性质信息变成电信息或进行反变换的设备称为终端设备。把电信息对光源的控制方式称为调制方式,而把光信息变成相应的电信息的方式叫做解调方式。
