Fujitsu’s technology has reduced the manufacturing cost of modules connecting homes and NTT Japan Optical Networks by 90%. These modules can send and receive optical signals to enable the conversion of optical signals in fiber optic networks and electrical signals from telephones and other home information terminals. Fujitsu is reducing manufacturing costs by reducing the number of components and simplifying the machining process. It installs photoelectric conversion elements (photon detectors and semiconductor lasers), electronic components and optical fibers on the same silicon wafer. The transmitting device includes an optical diode that monitors when transmitting optical signals. The receiving device can process information at 150 Mbps. NTT researchers invented a more economical method of production
