Internet In 1986, the National Science Foundation (NSF) set out to develop a high-speed backbone known as Nsfnet to connect supercomputer centers throughout the United States. In response to the need to increase backbone bandwidth, NSF selected Merit, a joint venture between MCI and IBM, to develop a 1.5Mbps backbone.
