《现代汉语规范词典》对“雅”的解释之一是“高尚的;不庸俗的”,对“俗”的解释之一为“平庸;不高雅”。现代汉语中用表示此种解释的“雅”构成的词语有“文雅”、“高雅”、“典雅”、“幽雅”、“雅观”、“雅致”、“雅静”、“雅驯”、“雅正”、“雅气”、“雅士”、“雅人”、“雅趣”、“雅兴”、“雅号”、“雅言”、“雅意”等;用表示此种解释的“俗”构成的词语有“粗俗”、“庸俗”、“低俗”、“恶俗”、“俗气”、“俗人”、“俗套”等。由上述解释和词语可以看出,雅与俗是相互对立的,它们之间有着明显的高与低、褒与贬的区别。
