一位《纽约时报》评论家在谈到卡拉汉时曾经说:“如果世界上还有一位更好的短篇小说家,我们还不知道他在哪里。”还有一点能够说明卡拉汉在短篇小说创作上的成就:艾·奥布赖恩每年编选的《最佳短篇小说集》,曾先后收入卡拉汉的14个短篇。卡拉汉的短篇小说大都有一个固定的程式。它们自成一体,通常较少行动而偏重人物的心理活动,但是每一个故事都很有戏剧性。作品会提出问题,然后以洗练的文笔将故事推向高潮;结尾有时并没有解决矛盾,而是留下许多可供读者回味的内容去掩卷思索。本辑收入的13个短篇,均系卡拉汉的佳作,从题材上可划分为四组。《最快乐的圣诞节》(A Very Merry Christmas)和《病访》(A Sick Call)是以宗教为题材的;《史蒂夫的帽子》(A Cap for Steve)、《小厂主》(The Little Business Man)、《非常特别的鞋子》(Very Special Shoes)、《劳碌的一生》(All the Years of Her Life)等是以少年儿童的经历为题材的;《结婚礼服》(A Wedding-Dress)、《骗子的悔恨》(The Cheat’s Remorse)和《往昔的争吵》(An Old Quarrel)讲犯罪者、穷人或老人的心理;《监视与等待》(Watching and Waiting)、《摇椅》(Rocking-Chair)、《蓝色的晨衣》(The Blue Kimono)和《日渐加深的裂痕》(Day by Day)数篇则是通过夫妻关系来表现人生。这些作品很有代表性,反映了卡拉汉一向所关注的事物,它们的写法也颇具典型性,体现了卡拉汉的一贯风格。本辑译介的13篇小说均由四川外语学院蓝仁哲教授选自1959年多伦多麦克米兰出版公司出版的《莫利·卡拉汉短篇小说集》、并且组织翻译的。慧辉
When a New York Times commenter talked about Callahan, he said: “If there is a better short story writer in the world, we do not know where he is.” “There’s one more point that Callahan is at Achievements in the Creation of Short Stories: Ai O’Brien’s ”Best Short Stories“, compiled each year, has successively earned 14 short stories in Callahan. Most of Callaghan’s short stories have a fixed program. They are self-contained, usually less action-oriented and character-conscious, but every story is dramatic. The work will ask questions and then conclude the story with a concise essay. At the end, conflicts may not be resolved at the end, leaving many memorable content for the reader to cover up. This series of 13 short stories, are all Callahan’s masterpiece, can be divided into four groups from the theme. A Very Merry Christmas and A Sick Call are based on religion; A Cap for Steve, The Little Business Man, Very Special Shoes, All the Years of Her Life, etc. are based on the experiences of children and adolescents. A Wedding- Dress, ”“ The Cheat’s Remorse, ”and“ An Old Quarrel ”about the guilty conscience, the poor, or the elderly; Watching and Waiting, Rocking -Chair, The Blue Kimono, and Day by Day show life through couples. These works are very representative, reflecting the Callahan has always been concerned about things, they are also quite typical style of writing, reflects the consistent style of Callahan. All the 13 novels translated in this series were selected by Professor Lan Renzhe from Sichuan Foreign Languages Institute from “The Collection of Morley Callaghan Short Stories” published by Macmillan Publishers, Toronto, 1959, and translated.
