Malignant tissue preferentially absorbed hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) compared to normal tissue. When the malignant cells come into contact with the excitation light of the appropriate wavelength, they produce a cytotoxic photosensitizing effect. It is generally believed that the main cytotoxic agent is monooxygen (an excited oxygen), which is generated after the energy of an excited hematoporphyrin is converted into oxygen. In theory, any light source can be used as a light therapy for HPD, but the optimal cytotoxicity is obtained through the light source of the HPD absorption band. High-energy-density lasers and large-diameter beams are best suited for the treatment of tumors. Mayo Hospital in the United States conducted research on 10 bronchial cancer patients, suggesting that HPD light therapy may have a therapeutic effect, at least for early lesions
