Western male research theory holds that the relationship between the male identity and the power discourse involving the male body is based on the social ideology and is subverted and reconstructed with historical, cultural and social conditions. Edward Albee, a famous American playwright, has shaped a series of male characters lacking in “masculinity” in several of his representative works. They frequently suffer from verbal violence of the opposite sex. They often fail in the game of competing rights discourse and are gradually marginalized by society or reduced to women. The collective aphasia of male characters not only subverts the traditional masculinity formed in the history of the United States, but also subverts the mainstream social ideology which dominates the patriarchal system and embodies the critical realism features of Albi’s absurd drama.
