Based on Austin’s theory of speech act and Goffman and Brown and Levinson’s theory of face, this paper analyzes and studies the refusal of speech acts among family members in the first sixty stories of A Dream of Red Mansions. The research shows that the refusal of speech act used by family members is both sharp and self-humiliating. It directly denies speech act as well as self-derogatory and indirect rejection of verbal act by the statute. The complexity of its characteristics shows the cultural imprint of that era.
