今天人类所吃的食物都是直接或间接地来自光合作用;所用的燃料,如煤等,也是来自远古的光合作用。从光合作用发现以来,人们一直期望能模拟光合作用以造福于人类。因此,模拟光合作用就成为研究光合作用的主要目的之一,当然其意义将不局限于人工合成食物,其成果还将有助于对植物光合作用机理和生命起源的研究;也有助于对其它星球上生命存在与否的探索工作。
