硅谷位于美国加利福尼亚州旧金山中半岛的海湾地区,以世界著名的高等学府斯坦福大学为中心,东起于旧金山湾,西至圣塔克鲁斯山脉,南面是硅谷之都圣荷西市。半个世纪前这个地区只是生产苹果、核桃、杏仁等作物的农牧业区,经过50多年的发展,到1999年,硅谷地区的GDP总值超过3000亿美元,占美国全国的3%左右,超过中国GDP总值的1/4。如果把硅谷视为一个国家,其经济实力可以排在世界第12位。那么,是什么原因使硅谷取得如此巨大的成就?或者说,硅谷有哪些创新优势能使它取得成功?目前,比较一致的看法认为硅谷的成功主要有以下几个方面的因素:
