As a language of communication media, it is closely linked with people’s concepts. Locke argues that concepts are symbolic signs of existence that exist in the human mind, and that language, as a symbolic symbol of ideas, externalizes it so that we can communicate with others. Based on this perspective, this article discusses Locke’s linguistic view, an important representative of epistemology in the 17th century, and its influence on the development of linguistics. The article holds that Locke’s linguistic view is based on his empiricist epistemology and is an integral part of European language philosophy and even the whole language philosophy. Its impact on linguistics is extensive and far-reaching, but not all are direct.
