Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of college students’ drinking and negative life events and to provide a reference for exploring the relationship between negative events and drinking behaviors among college students. Methods A total of 3 000 undergraduates from 8 universities in Hefei were selected for anonymous questionnaire by hierarchical clustering. Odinal Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between negative events and alcohol consumption. Results A total of 2 777 undergraduates were enrolled. Among them, 2 529 (91.1%) were at low risk, 168 (6.0%) were at high risk, 44 (1.6%) were drinking harmful alcohol and 36 (1.3%) were alcohol dependent. The average score of living negative events was (37.32 ± 23.95) points. The lower the score of college students’ interpersonal factor is, the more their preference is for alcohol dependence (OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.87-0.97). The higher the penalty factor, the more they tend to be alcohol dependent (OR = 1.06,95% CI = 1.02-1.10 ) And other negative living events tended to be more dependent on alcohol (OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.11-1.27). Conclusion College students in Hefei have improper drinking behaviors, and negative life events may be one of the important factors for college students to drink alcohol excessively. Colleges and universities should take appropriate measures to improve the mental health of college students and reduce the improper drinking rate.
