讲解科学成就的书笈,不仅要闡明人类思維的最終成果,并且要指出人們是如何不断地克服困难和获得正确方法的,从而把讀者引到研究工作的过程本身中去。高尔基紧接着高尔基的話,我們应該說,向我們介紹某些数学知識能解决哪些实际問題,无疑是很重要的,但介紹人們在确立这些原理时的思維过程也有同样的重要性。編制首批对数表的历史是很能說明这一点的。大家都会用对数表算出复杂的数字表达式的值;在高等学校学习时不少人要继續用到它,并且很多人都要把它用到自己的实践活动中去。对数表的应用領域是极其广闊的。所以就完全自然地发生了这样的問題,首批对数表是怎样編出来的呢?是哪些学者把这个强有力的工具贡献給人类的呢?他們为編这些表經历了怎样的道路,遇到了些什么样的困难呢。这些,都无法在中学課本中找到答案。
The book that explains the achievements of science must not only clarify the final results of human thinking, but also point out how people constantly overcome difficulties and obtain correct methods, so as to lead the readers to the process of research itself. Golgi followed Gorky’s words. We should say that it is undoubtedly important to introduce us to certain practical problems that can be solved by certain mathematical knowledge. However, the people’s thinking process in establishing these principles is equally important. The history of the preparation of the first logarithmic tables is a good illustration of this. Everyone will use the logarithmic table to figure out the value of complex numeric expressions; many people in colleges and universities will continue to use it, and many people will use it in their own practice. The application of the logarithm table is extremely broad. So this problem occurred completely naturally. How did the first logarithmic tables be compiled? Which scholars contributed this powerful tool to humans? What kind of path did they go through in preparing these tables? What kind of difficulties encountered? None of these can be found in the middle school textbooks.
