The use of high strength bolting on railway steel bridges has been around since the 1950s. Since the 1960s, high-strength bolts have increasingly replaced rivets and become the main form of bridge construction. A large number of research trials and experience show that high-strength bolts than riveted or welded with better static strength and resistance to labor, construction is simple, fast, easy to ensure quality, less maintenance and repair workload. In 1938, the United States replaced the rivets with high strength bolts made of medium carbon steel for the first time in bridge maintenance. 1951 American Riveting and Bolting Association developed the first high strength bolt connection specification. At present, bridge construction site has been widely used high-strength bolts.
