《八板》有单、双之分,约在百余年前民间(如山东、河南)就分称为《单八板》、《双八板》、民间艺人在“量板”过程中,依据“板”出现的单或双,又将《单八板》称之《单板》;《双八板》称之《双板》。现有材料表明,《单八板》有近二百余年的历史,在《一素子琵琶谱》(传为1763年)、《弦索备考》(1814年)、《华秋苹琵琶谱》(1819年)等谱集中早已存见。杨荫浏先生在《弦索十三套》(1955年)关于十六板的说明中指出:“八板有单八板、八谱、老六板等名称,因其通行全国各地,故有天下同的名称。”被人称为“诸谱之祖”的八板,实为民国所称的《单八板》。《双八板》早见于清·同治十二年(1873年)民间抄本《筝谱集成》,距今至少有百余年了。民间音乐家根据“不拘何谱、何调、以对板为真”的原则;按“八板定式”即:全曲为68板(8个乐句)组成。各乐句除第五乐句为12板外,其他均为8板。
