Objective To investigate the relationship between serum HER-2 levels and metabolic syndrome in middle-aged and elderly people. Methods The study population was 687 middle-aged and elderly people in Chongming Bridge Community, including 309 males and 378 females. Serum HER-2 levels were measured by ELISA. Metabolic syndrome is defined according to the NCEP ATP III (Asian Chinsterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III, NECP ATP III) Asian American standards. Results After adjusting for the related factors, the serum HER-2 level in the metabolic syndrome (n = 370) group was significantly higher than that in the control group (n = 317) [(12.4 ± 2.3) ng / m L vs (8.2 ± 1.6) ng / m L, P <0.001]. With the accumulation of metabolic syndrome components, serum HER-2 levels increased (P <0.001). After adjusting for other risk factors, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of metabolic syndrome in the fourth quartile serum HER-2 group was higher than that in the first quartile group (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.14 ~ 2.31, P <0.001). Conclusions Serum HER-2 levels are associated with the risk of developing metabolic syndrome in the middle-aged and elderly population, and this association is independent of the risk factors for other metabolic syndromes.
