ENSO AND ITS GLOBAL IMPORTANCENSR:What is ENSO and where did the name come from?Cane:ENSO is an acronym for‘El Ni(n)o (EN) and the Southem Oscillation (SO)’.‘El Ni(n)o’ now means a warming of the easte equatorial Pacific Ocean,from the South American coast to the dateline-a quarter of the way around the world.The name was originally used by fishermen for a local warming just along the coast of Peru and Ecuador that occurs everyyear shortly after Christmas.They named it for the Christ child:‘El Ni(n)o’ in Spanish.But the name is now used just for the large-scale warming that happens every two to seven years-about every four years on average.
