The article reviews the development of filmmaking in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) from 1948 to 2000. Starting with 1948, the British government organized the establishment of the Central African Film Unit (CAFU) this year as the regional colonial authority. Zimbabwe was detached from British rule and gained independence in 1980. The author believes that the development of Zimbabwe’s movie production since 1948 can be analyzed from the international development paradigm established by western governments. In recent years there has also been a call for the promotion of commercial films in Zimbabwe, which reflects the trend towards the implementation of subregional policies aimed at promoting the development of the film industry in Zimbabwe and throughout Africa. In fact, there is an ideological tension between “information” films sponsored by Western sponsors and non-mainstream narratives reflecting the overall identity of emerging Africa, and Zimbabwean filmmakers are struggling with this tension.
