In Mao Dun’s early novels, there are two obvious strategies of gender rhetoric. One is focusing on the psychological world of the heroine of the text, displaying the tragic fate of women. The second is to highlight the physiological gender characteristics of female figures in shaping the new female image. The former embodies the sympathy and compassion of unfortunate women as the male cultural person who possessed the concept of advanced gender culture during the May 4th Movement. The latter shows that Mao Dun, who is a “womanist”, has not escaped the unconscious deep psychology that regards women as the object of desire.
