Disasters over the past decade, like the pandemic SARS outbreak in 2003, the massive Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 and the recent world financial turmoil notwithstanding, China’s GDP has made a remarkable leap, soaring from RMB 12 trillion in 2002 to RMB 50.95 trillion in 2012. Steady scaling up of science and technology research and development has helped propel the country’s rapid economic development, having contributed 51. 7 percent to economic growth in 2011.
In recent years China has proactively promoted sci-tech innovations through wide-ranging research and development programs vital to state interests and to the well-being of its people.
