同学们，你们都认识There is和There are哥俩儿吧？最近他们可是烦恼多多。为什么呢？原来，他们都可以表示“在某地有某人或某物”，又都喜欢站在句首，因此总有一些同学把他们给搞错了。今天啊，他们想要告诉大家：他俩确实都来自There be家族，但个性却不尽相同。到底有什么区别呢？请听听他们的自我介绍吧。
There is
我平时喜欢和单数名词及不可数名词交朋友。瞧：
There is a big box on the table.
There is some milk in the glass.
There are
我只愿意與复数名词为伴。看：
There are lots of books in the library.
如果要变成一般疑问句，只要把咱们的be动词（is或are）请到最前面就可以了。如：
-Is there a music room in your school？
-Yes，there is.
-Are there any pictues on the wall？
-No，there aren’t.
当表示“在某地没有某人或某物”时，咱们的朋友not就会主动来帮忙。谦虚的not总是挨在俺哥俩儿的后面。瞧：
There is not （isn’t） a football on the playground.
There are not （aren’t） any chairs in the classroom.

我们There be家族里一般实行的是“就近原则”，即：使用There is还是There are，由离他最近的那个名词来决定。如：
There is a pen and two books on the desk.
There are two books and a pen on the desk.
