For nearly three decades, a series of highly sensitive heterocyclic azo phenolic compounds have been synthesized and many of the metal ions have been measured as spectrophotometric reagents. Among these compounds, pyridylazo phenols with alkylamino groups on the para position of the azo ring of phenol ring are most sensitive. However, most of these reagents are slightly water-soluble. In our current work, we have introduced sulfoalkyl groups to the amino groups of 2- (2-pyridylazo) -5-aminophenol compounds. Reagents are highly soluble in water due to the introduction of sulfoalkyl groups and are more sensitive than 2- (2-pyridylazo) -5-aminophenol.
