  第一颗无花果
  
  My candle burns at both ends;
  It will not last the night;
  But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—
  It gives a lovely light!

  埃德娜·圣文森特·米莱(Edna St. Vincent Millay,1892-1950),美国诗人兼剧作家,才气逼人,托马斯·哈代曾说:“美国的两大魅力:摩天大楼与埃德娜的诗”。米莱年少家贫,后因诗歌在全国比赛中获奖,得到资助进入大学就读。1917年,她来到纽约,开始了长盛不衰又饱受争议的作家生涯。1923年,她因《竖琴织工及其他诗篇》(The Harp Weaver and Other Poems)获普利策诗歌奖,成为美国史上首位获此殊荣的女性。米莱一生创作了大量优美的抒情诗,但其被引用最多的一首就是《第一颗无花果》。很多人认为,米莱代表上世纪20年代新的解放了的女性,而这首诗则恰切地反映出当时焦躁不安的青年浪漫和愤世嫉俗的精神。
