1 Introduction and Background In recent years, great progress has been made in optical fiber communication systems to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth requirements. The main limiting factors for SMF system performance include attenuation, dispersion and non-linearities, as well as the most noticeable polarization mode dispersion (PMD). For traditional single-mode fiber systems operating at 1310 nm windows, optical power loss due to fiber attenuation limits the system’s transmission distance.
