琵琶艺术源远流长,古人把它称为“神妙超伦之乐”;琵琶高手之间比试技艺、设擂相竞者亦自古有之。早在唐代贞元(785——805)年间,即有长安庄严寺和尚段善本假扮女妆,以高奥的《枫香调》角逐当时享誉“琵琶第一手”之称的康昆仑,并使康某愿执拜弟子的乐坛趣事流传于世。清末,各地琵琶名家云集江南,尤以上海为最。其时曾有两次擂台式的“琵琶会”,轰动一时,传为佳话。
