Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of zinc-dependent proteases that are mainly involved in the degradation, transport and remodeling of extracellular matrix (ECM) [1]. MMP-9, the largest member of the MMPs family, mainly degrades type IV collagen and plays an important role in cell migration, invasion, activation and atherosclerosis formation and vascular remodeling under certain pathological conditions [2].
