The authors measured the levels of serum TSH, T3, T4, γT3 and T3U in 69 patients with chronic hepatitis B during active and quiescent periods by radioimmunoassay. The results showed that the activities of TSH, T3 in patients with chronic persistent hepatitis were significantly lower than those in normal controls (P <0.01), and the quiescence returned to normal. The levels of TSH, T3, T4 and T3u in chronic active hepatitis and posthepatitis cirrhosis were significantly decreased <0.01). The quiescent T3 increased significantly (P <0.01), T3U also increased, and chronic active hepatitis was more obvious. The results showed that patients with chronic liver disease have abnormal secretion of pituitary-thyroid axis, and the decrease and recovery of T3 can directly reflect the severity and recovery status of liver disease.
