蛤堆顶遗址位于胶东半岛北岸,东经121°41′34.5″,北纬37°25′48″,隶属于烟台市牟平区大窑镇蛤堆后村。本区属于东亚季风大陆性气候,冬暖夏凉,四季分明。遗址坐落于丰山、牧山等丘陵余脉西侧,西北及北部临马鞍山、侯至山两座矮山丘,向北隔威乌高速公路与黄海相距1.5公里(图一);北部和南部均有一条小河流过,注入黄海;地势呈东北*西南倾斜,南部地势较低,形成一扇形凹地,海拔21米,因内含大量蛤壳,俗称“蛤堆顶”。遗址北部与蛤堆后村房屋相连,中心位置有横纵两条通村公路呈十字交叉状穿过,略呈长方形,南北长350米,东西宽270米,总面积约9万平
