1883年(光绪九年癸未) 本年,上海工部局书信馆在虹口开设分馆。英商中国东洋德律风公司接办丹商大北电报公司经营的上海市内电话业务。从此,该公司的电话线不断侵入上海浦东、南市、闸北等地区。3月31日(二月二十三日),官督商办电报总局和英商大东电报公司签订《中英会订上海至香港电报合同》十六款,规定中国同意大东水线在上海羊子角登陆;英方同意中国日后可把电报线由广州接至香港。本年,广州至九龙间电报开通。4月8日(三月初二日),沪粤电报线架设工程开工。5月7日(四月初一日),官督商办电报总局和英商大东电报公司签订《上海香港电报章程》六款,
In 1883 (nine years Guangxu Gui Wei) this year, the Shanghai Bureau of Letters opened in Hongkou branch library. The British Chinese Toyo Phones Company takes over the telephone business in Shanghai, which is operated by the Dasbei Telegraph Company of Dan Shang. Since then, the company’s telephone lines continue to invade Shanghai Pudong, Nanshi, Zhabei and other regions.
