上世纪七十年代中期,美国政府曾组织过一支运动队访问中国,莫娜·斯查鲁也随队来到了北京。当时,她可是美国网球的头号女双选手。在中国期间,斯查鲁特意抽出时间去接受了一次针灸治疗,她希望古老中国的这种传统医术能减轻自己的网球肘症状。在接受针灸治疗后不久,斯查鲁就对媒体宣称她的网球肘被“治愈”了,然而很遗憾,中国传统医术治愈美国选手网球肘的故事在世界刚流传几个月,斯查鲁便躺在了手术台上,这次她又转而希望借助外科手术来解决肘部那无休止的疼痛。
