In “Japanese Miscellaneous Poems”, Huang Zunxian interpreted the Meiji Reform in Japan in the form of poetry, which was one of the earliest comprehensive reactions and records recorded by the people in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties to the Meiji Restoration. There is a big difference between the “script” and the “original” of “Japanese Chore Poems”. His conscious revision to the collection of poems eleven years after the publication of “Japanese Chore Poems” means that he The perception and assessment of Japan have changed in comparison with those of the Japanese embassy counselor. Through examining the difference between “fixed edition” and “original”, we can see that the concept of Huang Zunxian has undergone tremendous changes by acting as the Counselor of the Embassy in Japan, the Consul General of San Francisco in the United States, and the Counselor of the British Culture in the United Kingdom. In modern times, the concept of democracy gradually formed and his understanding of Japan was further deepened. He deliberately avoided the negative appraisal of Japan and set an example for his learning in modern China.
