林语堂(1895~1976)是我国著名的现代散文家、小说家和翻译家,又是优秀的英语教育家、音韵学家、词书编籑家和中文打字机发明家。作为一位学贯中西的大学者,他毕生努力向中国读者们介绍欧美文化,又向欧美读者们推荐中国文化,促进了中西文化的交流,在国际上产生了深远的影响。改革开放以来,国内学术界开始重新客观地评价林语堂的得失,肯定了他在文学和翻译学方面的贡献,再版了他的许多中英文作品,并以各种形式对他加以纪念。
Lin Yutang (1895-1976) is a famous modern essayist, novelist and translator in China. He is also a good English educator, phonologist, phonetic transcriptionist and inventor of Chinese typewriters. As a Chinese and Western university student, he devoted his life to introducing European and American cultures to Chinese readers, recommending Chinese culture to European and American readers, and promoting the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, which has had far-reaching international influence. Since the reform and opening up, the domestic academic circles began to re-evaluate Lin Yutang’s achievements and losses objectively, confirmed his contribution to literature and translation studies, reprinted many of his works in both English and Chinese, and commemorated him in various forms.
