汕头市航运总公司沿海客货运输有过鼎盛时期,1987年完成货运量70.5万吨、2.13亿吨公里,1992年港澳客运量达到27.8万人次。随着汕头交通基础设施日臻完善,海湾大桥建成,广梅汕铁路、深汕高速公路的通车,汕头陆、海、空、铁已形成立体交通体系。水路运输受到很大冲击,汕航总客货运输处于停产半停产边缘。1996年沿海货运量已降至25.3万吨和6588万吨公里,港澳客运量
