满清皇族视寿诞演戏为重要的朝廷仪典。乾隆时,御用文人创编了专为万寿节演出的剧目“九九大庆”。“九九大庆”以演福神祝寿为主、排场宏大,数量颇多,篇幅上以单折短剧为多、语言雅致多晦涩语、仪式性特征明显,创编上呈现出一定的程式性特征。作为特殊场合演出的剧目,其文化功能主要是给寿星拜寿、给最高统治者唱赞歌,其次也有向参加庆典的属国、邻国等夸耀文治武功的目的,并以艺术的形式向臣民强化封建皇权、等级制度等,有一定的教育教化作用。
