Liangyuan Garden of Foshan City, Guangdong Province, a private garden built in the Qing Dynasty, is one of the four famous gardens in Guangdong Province. The general layout of Liangyuan Garden is an organic combination of courtyard house, ancestral temple and gardening. The pavillions, terraces, chambers, sinuous paths and corridors are typical of Guangdong Province.Regrettably, with the decline of the Liang family and the ravages of war, the garden has been gradually dam aged. By the early 5Os, only one scenic spot was left and the scenic area was reduced to 23OO square metres. In 1992 the government decided to renovate the Liangyuan Garden. The first phase of the renovation project was completed in 1996.As the renovated area is much smaller than the original Liangyuan, the idea of the renovation plan was to conduct scientific abstraction rather than complete restoration. The original 1ayout of courtyard house, ancestral temple and gardening is maintained. With the lake as the centre, four groups of main buildings are built around the lake. In the process of renovation, ancient building materials typical of the Qing Dynasty are used for the beam framework and ornamental components of brick and timber structure and blue bricks etc.
