杜德桥的《妙善传说》在描述传说的演变过程中,强调历时性与形态学两者之间的张力,因而避免了以顾颉刚的孟姜女研究为代表的主题流变研究中常见的“一源单线”思路之流弊。同时,他的研究并不以勾勒历史线索为主要目标,而是将与妙善传说相关的所有写本看作一个有机整体,在普泛性的立场上为之设定了材料的起讫界限,并在此界限内,将每一个重要写本当作有独立生命的个体,努力探寻其与外在环境之间的互动关联。这一研究可以被视为继顾颉刚孟姜女研究之后最有典范意义的中国传说研究之作,两者之间显示出研究范式上的变换。
