At the two welded solid media boundaries, the three components of the particle velocity and the vertical pull force are continuous across the boundary. However, when crossing the fluid-solid interface, only the vertical component of the particle velocity is continuous and the horizontal component may not be continuous. In addition, the fluid pressure is opposite to the vertical component of the tensile force in the solid, and the horizontal component of the tensile force at the interface is zero. Using the latter phenomenon, the total component velocity can be calculated from the vertical component of the particle velocity recorded by the single-component detector disposed on the seafloor
