符定一,字宇澄,1877年出生在湖南省湘潭县晓南乡新铺村,幼年曾读私熟,后进入衡阳师范学堂,毕业后考取北平师范大学堂。1908年回湖南执教,先后任省立一中、湖南师范、衡湘中学的校长,湖南教育学会副会长,筹安会湖南分会副会长,不久又当选为安福国会众议院议员。1926年出任国民政府财政部次长,抗日战争时期曾一度回乡隐居,捐资办学,资助有志青年出国留学深造。符定一毕生致力于中国语言文字的研究,编著成书的《联绵字典》约540余万字,原稿堆放足有1米多高。符定一不仅是毛泽东的老师,而且还被毛泽东亲切地称作“党的忠实朋友”。
Set a word, the word Yu Cheng, born in 1877 in Hunan Province Xiangtan County Xiaonan Village shop, childhood read familiar, after entering the Hengyang Normal School, after graduating from Peking Normal University. In 1908, he returned to Hunan for coaching. He successively held the posts of provincial one, principal of Hunan Normal University and Hengxiang Middle School, vice president of Hunan Education Society, vice chairman of Hunan Branch of Security Association, and soon was elected as member of the Anfu Parliament. In 1926, he served as the vice minister of the Ministry of Finance of the National Government. During the war of resistance against Japan, he returned to his native place for seclusion for one time and donated money to run a school to help aspiring young people study abroad. Defined a life dedicated to the study of Chinese language, compiled into a book, “Lian Dianpian” about 540 words, the original manuscript foot 1 meter high. It was not only Mao Zedong’s teacher, but also affectionately known as Mao Zedong’s “loyal friend of the party.”
