圆形方孔钱的开端——秦半两秦始皇统一全国以后,也统一了战国时期纷乱的货币形式。秦朝的钱采用圆形方孔形式,重半两(“两”是古代的一种重量单位),右边是“半”字,左边是“两”字,史称“秦半两”。“秦半两”是圆形方孔钱的开端,且这种形式流行了两千多年。从此,珠玉龟贝之类,仅作装饰,不再是货币。轻便的五铢钱秦半两过重,不利于携带和交易,因此,汉武帝时期发行五铢钱,代替了秦半两。“铢”也是古代的一种重量单位,一两的二十四分之一为一铢,所以五铢很轻。
